Saving on insurance

How Much Can You Save by Consolidating Your Insurance?

If your cover has built up over the years — a policy here, a bank add-on there, a renewal you've never questioned — there's a good chance you're paying for more than you need. Here's where the savings usually hide, and how to find yours.

"How much can I save?" is the first thing most people ask. The honest answer is: it depends entirely on what you're paying now and how your cover is structured. What we can say is where the savings tend to come from — and most households and businesses have at least one of these working against them.

What does "consolidating" insurance actually mean?

Consolidating simply means taking a single, joined-up view of everything you're insured for — instead of a collection of separate policies that were each bought in isolation. When one broker can see the whole picture, it becomes much easier to spot cover you're paying for twice, gaps that leave you exposed, and discounts you qualify for but aren't getting.

Where the savings usually come from

  • Overlapping cover. It's common to be insured for the same thing in two places — for example, items covered both by a standalone policy and by a bank or store product. You only get to claim once, but you pay for both.
  • Premium creep. Premiums often drift upward at each renewal. If you've been with the same insurer for years without reviewing, you may be paying well above what your risk warrants today.
  • Unclaimed discounts. Security features, a claims-free record, or simply bundling policies can all reduce premiums — but only if someone asks for them and structures the cover correctly.
  • Over-insurance. Insuring an item for far more than it's worth, or carrying cover you no longer need, quietly inflates your premium every month.
  • Buying direct vs. shopping the market. A direct insurer can only offer its own product. A broker compares across several insurers to find the right fit for your risk — see how an independent broker works.

So how much can you actually save?

There's no honest one-size-fits-all percentage — anyone promising a fixed figure before looking at your cover is guessing. The real number depends on how much duplication and premium creep has built up in your particular situation. For some people the saving is modest; for others who've never reviewed their cover, it can be meaningful. The only way to know is to look at what you actually have.

A simple way to check your own cover

You don't need to be an expert to start. Pull together what you're currently paying across every policy, note what each one covers, and look for the same risk appearing twice. That exercise alone often surfaces an overlap or two.

To make it quicker, our free Insurance Audit walks you through a few questions about your current cover and spend, then highlights likely overlaps, missed discounts and consolidation opportunities — with an estimate of what you could save. It takes a couple of minutes and there's no obligation.

How Excessible helps

As an FSCA-authorised broker, we review your existing cover across our panel of insurers, point out where you're doubling up or under-protected, and restructure things so you're paying for the right cover at a fair price.
